Chinese sportswear brand uses origami-inspired mechanics to turn footwear cushioning into a platform for structural innovation, marking a push from manufacturing strength to technology and design leadership.

PARIS, Sept. 17, 2026 — ANTA is using Paris Design Week to present a technology story that goes beyond conventional sportswear: its ANTA FOLD platform applies the structural principles of origami and mechanical computation to running-shoe midsoles.

Unveiled at the China Creative Pavilion (CCP) in Paris, ANTA FOLD is built around the idea that folding structures can be engineered to control how footwear absorbs, stores and releases energy. The initiative positions cushioning not simply as a material challenge, but as a problem of geometry, mechanics and design.

The centrepiece of the presentation, From Plane to Rebound, illustrates that concept through a single sheet of paper. Made from 720 triangular tessellation units, the installation forms the silhouette of a running shoe through natural deformation alone, without cutting or glue. The structure demonstrates how geometry can redistribute force and create strength from an apparently fragile material.

That principle has been translated into a footwear engineering platform developed by the ANTA Innovation Laboratory, working with research teams led by Professor Zhong You of the University of Oxford, Professor Yan Chen of Tianjin University and Professor Guanyun Wang of Zhejiang University.

From one midsole to a structural platform

ANTA says FOLD is designed as an extendable “structural matrix platform”. By changing the geometry and arrangement of origami-inspired units parametrically, the company can adapt midsole structures for different users and performance requirements.

The approach could have broader implications for sports footwear development because it shifts part of the innovation equation from simply adding or changing materials toward engineering the structure itself.

Its H1 Waterbomb configuration uses a staggered arrangement of six-crease units and a negative Poisson's ratio structure. ANTA says the design concentrates energy during landing and releases it rapidly during take-off, targeting energy absorption and responsive rebound for urban running and everyday movement.

Two additional structures demonstrate the platform's scalability: Z1 Square-twist, developed for rolling-related scenarios, and M1 Multi-layer, focused on energy absorption.

The company says ANTA FOLD has already received international design recognition, including a Red Dot Design Award and Gold and Platinum honours from the MUSE Design Awards.

Sports technology enters the design conversation

ANTA's Paris presentation is significant because the company is placing a technical footwear system inside a global design environment rather than presenting it solely as a performance product.

Franck Millot, President of Paris Design Week, highlighted the longstanding relationship between sport, materials, technology and design, describing running footwear as capable of functioning as an art object. He also pointed to the growing confidence and distinct identity of Chinese design.

The programme extended beyond the exhibition itself. ANTA staged an Architecture Running event through Paris, bringing local runners and international guests into contact with the FOLD footwear technology against the city's historic architectural backdrop. A FOLD Workshop also invited visitors to create origami structures and explore the mechanical principles behind folding.

A different export from China

The strategic significance for ANTA extends beyond one shoe technology.

The brand's appearance at Paris Design Week follows earlier FOLD activities in Shanghai and a preview in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, forming part of a wider effort to take the concept into international design and consumer markets.

ANTA described the initiative as part of a transition from exporting manufacturing capabilities to exporting technology and design. That represents a potentially important evolution for Chinese sportswear brands seeking greater influence in global markets, where product differentiation increasingly depends on proprietary technology, design language and brand identity alongside manufacturing scale.

At its core, ANTA FOLD turns a traditional Chinese-associated craft principle into a modern engineering system for sports footwear. The Paris showcase therefore serves not only as a product presentation, but as a statement about how Chinese sportswear companies are seeking to compete globally: through structural science, proprietary innovation and design-led storytelling.

For ANTA, the journey from a paper sheet to a running-shoe midsole reflects a larger ambition — moving the conversation from “Made in China” toward “Designed and Engineered in China.”
