When Camille Styles moved from Austin to a 1950s bungalow near Zuma Beach, she knew what she wanted the home to feel like: warm, comfortable, and ready for kids, pets, sand, dirt and the occasional spill. The founder and editor-in-chief of CamilleStyles.com also had a practical problem. Several rooms in the newly renovated house were square, and standard rug sizes simply didn’t fit them.

Her answer was Ernesta, the retailer that calls itself America’s largest seller of custom-sized, designer-quality rugs. “The design is somewhat minimal, but warmth and comfort are the biggest priorities,” Styles said. With so much movement between indoors and out, she wanted rugs that suited the home but could handle everyday life.

She started with 10 samples, holding colors, materials and textures up against the home’s finishes and furniture, and narrowed them to five.

In the great room, Calico in Latte anchors the dining and seating area while leaving the natural wood floors visible. The media room got a custom 13-by-13-foot Xander in Cedar, which contrasts with the oatmeal-colored sectional. In the primary bedroom, Cormac in Oatmeal adds texture to a quiet, neutral palette.

The children had a say, too. Her son’s room has Maycomb in Linen, a lighter rug set against a darker palette, while her daughter chose Sugar in Cream for its soft, plush feel.

For Ernesta, the home shows what the company is built around. “Custom sizing can make a real difference in a room,” said CEO and co-founder John Foley, pointing to rooms with unusual layouts and materials that suit daily living. The company, a 2025 Good Housekeeping Home Renovation Awards winner, delivers made-to-order rugs in weeks rather than months.
