TCF POST Report

SAN FRANCISCO — Online personal styling service Stitch Fix has released new research indicating that the postpartum style journey extends far beyond the traditional “bounce back” timeline, impacting women’s confidence and personal identity for years.

The study, which surveyed 1,000 mothers, highlights significant wardrobe and emotional hurdles faced after childbirth:

  • A Sharp Drop in Confidence: Postpartum moms experience a 30-percentage-point drop in style confidence, with just over 40% reporting feeling confident post-baby compared to over 70% prior.
  • A Lost Identity: 40% of mothers state they still do not feel like themselves when getting dressed two or more years after giving birth. Furthermore, more than 50% report that their pre-pregnancy wardrobe no longer mirrors who they are.
  • Everyday Emotional Toll: Nearly 65% of mothers admit to avoiding family photos or skipping social events entirely because of wardrobe insecurity.

Partnering to Change the Narrative

To challenge the pressures of rapid postpartum recovery expectations, Stitch Fix has teamed up with Dancing with the Stars professional and The Movement Club founder Lindsay Arnold. Arnold, who welcomed her third child in June, emphasizes the importance of celebrating mothers where they are right now rather than pushing them to fit into past versions of themselves.

“It’s time to stop pressuring moms to rush back to who they used to be, and start celebrating who they are right now,” says Lindsay Arnold, Former Dancing with the Stars Pro and Stitch Fix Partner. “After having a baby, looking into your closet can be frustrating! More than half of us feel like our pre-pregnancy clothes don’t reflect who we are anymore, and shopping feels completely overwhelming.”

According to Sarah Funderburk, Vice President of Styling at Stitch Fix, over 80% of mothers agree that wearing clothes aligned with their personal style builds confidence, noting that investing in clothes that fit their current bodies is a critical catalyst for self-assurance.
