How Clothing and Footwear Are Reshaping eBay’s Growth Strategy

TCF POST Analysis

eBay delivered a stronger-than-expected second quarter in 2026, but beneath the headline financial results lies a more important development for the global textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) industry: fashion has emerged as one of the marketplace’s fastest-growing strategic categories, supported by expanding authentication services, stronger consumer-to-consumer (C2C) supply, and a deeper commitment to circular fashion.

The company’s Q2 performance also reveals how sourcing patterns in apparel and footwear are shifting toward authenticated luxury, pre-loved inventory and digitally enabled resale, creating new opportunities for brands, manufacturers and resale ecosystem participants.

During the quarter, eBay generated $22.4 billion in Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), up 14% on an FX-neutral basis, while revenue increased 14% to $3.13 billion. Strategic priorities—including Focus Categories, C2C, and Recommence—now account for more than 70% of total marketplace GMV, up more than 20% year over year.

Fashion Becomes a Core Growth Driver

Among eBay’s focus categories, Fashion was identified alongside Collectibles, Motors and Refurbished Goods as one of the principal contributors to accelerated marketplace growth.

Unlike in previous quarters, when fashion was discussed primarily as a traffic driver, management now highlights several structural improvements that are increasing buyer confidence and expanding premium inventory.

Growth within Fashion was led predominantly by:

  • luxury fashion;
  • pre-loved apparel and footwear;
  • authenticated branded products;
  • broader resale participation by consumers.

To strengthen trust in higher-value transactions, eBay expanded its Authenticity Guarantee programme to cover more than 100 fashion brands, while simultaneously testing optional authentication across a wider range of price points. The company also extended authentication eligibility to jewellery sourced from Greater China, signalling continued investment in cross-border luxury resale.

These initiatives indicate that eBay increasingly views authentication not simply as a fraud-prevention tool, but as an infrastructure investment designed to unlock higher-value apparel and footwear transactions.

Clothing and Footwear Benefit from Circular Fashion Momentum

One of the strongest strategic messages emerging from the quarter is eBay’s commitment to circular fashion.

Just days after the quarter closed, the company completed its $1.2 billion acquisition of Depop, bringing one of the world’s leading Gen Z fashion resale platforms into the eBay ecosystem.

Management repeatedly framed the acquisition not merely as an expansion of marketplace scale but as a strategic move to strengthen leadership in:

  • consumer-to-consumer fashion;
  • recommerce;
  • accessible pre-loved apparel;
  • authenticated luxury fashion.

Depop complements eBay’s existing strengths by contributing discovery-led, social commerce capabilities and deeper engagement among younger consumers, while eBay contributes global reach, logistics, shipping infrastructure, marketplace trust and authentication capabilities.
For the apparel industry, this signals continued acceleration of organised resale rather than a temporary trend.

Apparel Supply is Becoming Increasingly Consumer-Led

Perhaps the most significant insight for apparel sourcing professionals is the evolution of inventory sourcing itself.

Rather than relying primarily on commercial sellers, eBay’s growth strategy increasingly centres on expanding consumer-generated supply, particularly within fashion.

The company reported:

  • C2C GMV grew more than 20%;
  • healthy consumer seller growth across major markets;
  • stronger supply generated through AI-powered Magical Listing technology;
  • differentiated inventory concentrated in Collectibles, Electronics and Fashion.

Management described this as strengthening the marketplace’s “sell-to-buy flywheel,” where easier listing encourages more individuals to sell unused apparel, footwear and accessories, thereby increasing available inventory without requiring traditional wholesale sourcing.

This represents an important structural sourcing shift: apparel inventory growth increasingly comes from households rather than manufacturers or distributors.

Authentication Expands the Addressable Luxury Footwear Market

Although eBay did not separately disclose footwear performance, several initiatives directly support premium footwear resale.

The expansion of Authenticity Guarantee to more fashion brands broadens eligibility for luxury sneakers and designer footwear, while optional authentication at lower price points could enlarge resale participation beyond the ultra-premium segment.

Combined with increased buyer protection, these measures lower transaction risk for both buyers and sellers, improving liquidity across branded footwear markets.

Met Gala Reinforces Pre-Loved Fashion Positioning

Beyond marketplace operations, eBay continued using cultural marketing to reposition resale fashion as premium rather than secondary.

For the fourth consecutive year, designers and creators sourced one-of-a-kind garments through eBay for appearances at the Met Gala, reinforcing the marketplace as a destination for pre-loved fashion rather than merely discounted apparel.

This branding strategy supports higher-value apparel transactions while encouraging consumers to view resale as part of mainstream fashion consumption.

Logistics Investments Improve Apparel Marketplace Efficiency

The company also continued investing in fulfilment infrastructure that benefits apparel and footwear sellers.

In the UK, eBay launched Managed Shipping, enabling eligible sellers to ship domestically while eBay manages customs, returns and international delivery.

The programme is designed to lower shipping costs, simplify cross-border transactions and increase marketplace velocity. Expanded partnerships with InPost and Royal Mail also significantly increase pickup and drop-off accessibility for UK sellers and buyers.

For apparel exporters and resale merchants, these initiatives reduce friction in cross-border fulfilment—a key barrier for second-hand clothing trade.

Sourcing Dynamics: What the Quarter Reveals

For apparel and footwear sourcing professionals, eBay’s Q2 results point to several structural market shifts rather than short-term sales gains.

First, sourcing is becoming increasingly decentralised. Inventory growth is coming from millions of individual consumers using AI-assisted listing tools instead of traditional wholesale channels.

Second, authentication is becoming part of the sourcing process. Verified luxury products command higher buyer confidence, enabling greater circulation of premium apparel, footwear and accessories.

Third, circular sourcing is expanding globally. The integration of Depop adds a younger, fashion-focused supply base that complements eBay’s existing authenticated luxury marketplace.

Fourth, digital trust is replacing physical inspection. Authentication, buyer protection, AI listing technology and managed logistics collectively reduce transaction friction, making resale inventory more scalable.

Finally, recommerce is becoming a permanent sourcing channel. Rather than competing directly with new apparel manufacturing, resale increasingly operates alongside traditional production, extending product lifecycles while creating recurring commercial value.

Outlook

Looking ahead, management expects strategic priorities to continue driving broad-based marketplace growth while Depop contributes additional fashion GMV beginning in the third quarter. Guidance suggests the acquisition will initially dilute earnings because of integration investments, but management expects Depop to become accretive to operating income by 2028.

For the global clothing and footwear industry, eBay’s latest quarter demonstrates that future marketplace expansion will be driven less by volume alone and increasingly by authenticated luxury, consumer-generated inventory, AI-enabled resale, and integrated circular fashion ecosystems—developments that are reshaping both sourcing strategies and the economics of apparel resale.
