GREENSBORO, N.C. — There was always something unguarded about the way Marilyn Monroe wore denim. Stripped of the studio gloss, the furs, and the choreographed glamour that defined so much of her public image, the photographs Eve Arnold took of her on the set of what would become her final film show a woman at ease — leaning into a well-worn jacket the way someone leans into an old friend. It’s a softer, more private Marilyn: still luminous, but tired in the way that reads as human rather than staged, caught in a rare unrehearsed moment between takes. That quiet, off-duty intimacy is now the emotional center of a new fashion collaboration.
Denim heritage brand Lee has launched the Lee x Marilyn Monroe™ Collection, a limited-edition capsule timed to Monroe’s 100th birthday and built around the Arnold photographs of her wearing Lee’s Storm Rider™ jacket. Rather than reproducing Monroe’s image outright, the line translates the mood of those images — unpolished confidence, tomboyish ease layered over glamour — into a full ready-to-wear capsule of jackets, dresses, denim, and knitwear.
The Concept
Lee’s Vice President of Global Design, Vivian Rivetti, framed the project as an act of reinterpretation rather than replication, saying the goal was to capture the spirit of Monroe’s aesthetic filtered through a contemporary Lee lens. Dana Carpenter, Executive Vice President of Entertainment at Authentic Brands Group — which owns the Marilyn Monroe estate — positioned the tie-up as an extension of Monroe’s century-long cultural footprint, introducing her archival style to a new generation of shoppers.
The pairing leans on a straightforward brand logic: two names, decades apart, both built on the idea of durability and timelessness — one in fabric, one in image.
Inside the Capsule
The collection’s centerpiece is a limited-edition update to the Storm Rider jacket itself, finished with an exclusive Marilyn Monroe–palette blanket lining, custom labeling, and hidden red lip embroidery — a recurring motif used across the line. Supporting pieces include:
- The Boyfriend Button-Down Shirt — riffing on Monroe’s classic off-duty pairing of a white shirt with jeans, finished with tonal cuff embroidery.
- The Coatigan — an oversized, sweater-inspired layering piece drawn from Monroe’s final photoshoot wardrobe.
- The Marilyn Jean — a retro straight-leg, high-rise style with a custom interior label and hem that can be worn cuffed or released for extra length.
- The Halter Dress — referencing one of Monroe’s most iconic on-screen moments, updated with adjustable straps, back smocking, and a removable waist tie.
- Graphic Tees and Sweatshirts — including archival Eve Arnold imagery and a striped baby tee nodding to Monroe’s early modeling years.
Sizing spans 24–34 in bottoms and XS–XL in apparel, with retail pricing set between $47.99 and $187.99.
Distribution and Market Reach
The capsule is rolling out globally across Lee’s owned e-commerce and retail channels in the United States, Mexico, Europe, Japan, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Ecuador, with additional placement at Nordstrom.com, Amazon, Walmart.com, and select boutique retailers.
Industry Context
The launch adds to a growing pattern of heritage denim brands turning to entertainment IP and archival celebrity imagery to refresh their positioning with younger consumers — a strategy Authentic Brands Group has run at scale across its portfolio of estates. For Lee, celebrating 135 years in business this year, the Monroe tie-up doubles as both a nostalgia play and a statement about the brand’s own staying power, positioning its workwear roots alongside one of the twentieth century’s most enduring style icons.
