BioFibreLoop project pushes optimisation of bio-based, non-toxic functional textiles

The BioFibreLoop project—coordinated by the Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung (DITF)—has reached a critical milestone with the completion of its first functional Digital Twin, a virtual modeling tool designed to revolutionize the production of sustainable, non-toxic textiles.

Technical Innovation

  • Virtual Modeling: The Digital Twin simulates laser-based embossing processes, where biomimetic structures are stamped into textile coatings using heat and pressure.
  • Process Optimization: The tool analyzes material properties and process variables—such as temperature, pressure, and contact time—to predict final surface performance and wetting behavior.
  • AI Integration: Future phases will incorporate machine learning and AI-supported methods to further optimize production parameters and enhance model accuracy through sensor-based data.

Economic and Sustainability Impact

  • Resource Efficiency: By enabling virtual scenario testing, the Digital Twin significantly reduces the need for material-intensive, time-consuming “trial-and-error” physical experiments.
  • Accelerated Development: The framework decreases development cycles, lowering costs while supporting the industry’s transition toward data-driven, transparent manufacturing.
  • Project Scale: Supported by a €7 million budget (with €6.5 million in EU funding), this 42-month initiative involves 13 partners, with administrative and communication support from the Steinbeis Europa Zentrum, working to scale up circular, high-performance textile technologies.
