Deal points to a Fall 2027 launch as legwear giant expands its outdoor apparel footprint

TCF POST Report

WINSTON-SALEM, NC, August 19– Renfro Brands, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based sock and legwear manufacturer, has secured the exclusive North American license to produce and market socks for outdoor lifestyle brand Free Country, the two companies announced this week. The agreement marks Renfro’s latest move to broaden its outdoor category presence and gives Free Country a dedicated manufacturing partner for a product line it hasn’t previously built out on its own.

What’s in the deal

Under the long-term licensing agreement, Renfro will design, produce and distribute Free Country-branded socks across North America, with the first collection slated to hit retail shelves in fall 2027. The initial men’s and women’s lineup is being built around hiking, walking, training, travel and general everyday wear, with an emphasis on cushioning, moisture management and durable construction — features meant to let the socks move from trail use to daily life without a hard line between the two.

Distribution will run through Free Country’s existing network of retail partners and authorized dealers.

Why it matters for both brands

Free Country, founded in 1990, has built its identity around affordable, versatile outdoor gear and now sells in more than 20 countries. Handing off sock production to a specialized licensee lets the brand extend its product range without building manufacturing capability from scratch — a common strategy among apparel brands looking to grow into adjacent categories quickly.

For Renfro, the deal adds another recognizable name to a client roster that already includes some of the industry’s biggest labels. The company, which traces its manufacturing history back more than a century, has positioned itself in recent years as more than a contract manufacturer — pitching itself to partners as a “brand steward” that handles design, merchandising and product development in addition to production.

In their own words

Renfro CEO Jay Robinson framed the partnership as a natural fit, pointing to shared values around performance and accessibility between the two companies, while emphasizing his company’s design and innovation capabilities as the differentiator in the deal.

Free Country founder and CEO Ira Schwartz said the licensing search came down to finding a partner with category expertise and a track record of brand-building — criteria he said Renfro met clearly enough to make the choice straightforward.

The bigger picture

The announcement is the latest example of legwear manufacturers absorbing licensing rights for lifestyle and outdoor brands rather than those brands building sock lines in-house — a pattern that has become increasingly common as apparel companies look to specialists for categories outside their core competency. With more than a year until the Fall 2027 launch, neither company has released pricing, specific SKU counts, or which retailers will carry the initial collection.
