Inside Arc’teryx’s Plan to Build Jackets That Regenerate Themselves

North Vancouver, B.C. — Arc’teryx is trying something most outerwear brands have avoided: designing a hardshell jacket to be taken apart. The company just introduced System 0, a framework meant to rewire how it designs, builds, sells, repairs and eventually breaks down its gear — instead of treating recycling as an afterthought once a jacket is already worn out.

First up: the Sperro SV

The jacket leading the charge is the Sperro SV, a mountain-grade hardshell that Arc’teryx calls its most technically advanced shell yet. It’s built with Gore-Tex Pro fabric and the ePE membrane, tested alongside Gore-Tex’s own engineers to hit the usual waterproof/windproof/breathable marks.

The twist is what happens after the jacket dies. Arc’teryx worked with Aquafil — the company behind ECONYL regenerated nylon — to design the face fabric and backer so they can be pulled apart and recycled rather than landfilled. Once a Sperro SV is truly beyond repair, it goes through a chemical process that splits the nylon from the Gore-Tex membrane, and the nylon goes back to Aquafil to become new yarn.

There are smaller fixes too: a zipper slider that can actually be swapped out (zippers are usually where these jackets die first), plus three years of unlimited repairs through Arc’teryx’s ReBIRD program. The jacket has apparently been through field testing with North Shore Rescue, the search-and-rescue crew out of Vancouver.

Sperro SV is also the first jacket to carry a new TESTEX Circularity certification — a standard Arc’teryx says it helped build because nothing like it really existed for apparel. It’s meant to independently back up the durability, repairability and recyclability claims, rather than leaving them as marketing copy.

The bigger play

System 0 isn’t starting from scratch — it’s an extension of ReBIRD, the wash/repair/resale/trade-in system Arc’teryx already runs. What’s new is pushing those ideas back into the design and manufacturing process itself, instead of bolting them on after the fact.

CEO Stuart Haselden’s pitch is that Arc’teryx has always built gear meant to be fixed rather than tossed, and this is the next step — trying to make sure that when a product truly can’t be repaired anymore, it doesn’t just end up as landfill. Chief Creative Officer Katie Becker says they picked a hardshell to start with on purpose, since it’s arguably the hardest product in their lineup to make circular — the logic being that if it works here, it can work everywhere else in the line.

Why the industry should pay attention

Technical apparel has a real recycling problem: laminates and blended fabrics that perform well are usually the hardest to break down. Sperro SV is Arc’teryx’s attempt to prove you don’t have to choose between high performance and a product that can eventually be recycled.

The bigger question is whether TESTEX Circularity turns into something the rest of the industry actually adopts as a shared standard — right now, circularity claims in apparel are mostly unverified marketing language. And the real test for Arc’teryx isn’t the launch jacket — it’s whether the chemical recycling and take-back logistics behind it can work at scale, or whether Sperro SV ends up as a one-off flagship rather than a template for the rest of the collection.
