The Kappahl Group has announced a strategic partnership to advance its circular business ambitions by acquiring a majority stake in Arkivet, Sweden’s leading “Modern Second Hand” retail chain.
The acquisition integrates Arkivet’s circular expertise into the Kappahl Group’s brand portfolio—which includes the Kappahl and Newbie labels—as both companies prepare to leverage shared resources to scale operations across the Nordic region and international markets.
Strategic Highlights:
- Scaling Growth: The partnership provides Arkivet with the infrastructure to expand its curated second-hand model beyond its established footprint in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö.
- Operational Synergy: Kappahl Group will continue its internal circular initiatives while adopting Arkivet’s commission-based business model to address rising consumer demand for sustainable fashion.
- Brand Autonomy: Arkivet will maintain its independent brand identity, continuing to operate its specialized in-store experiences and digital platform, Arkivet.com.
“By investing in innovative companies such as Arkivet, we create better opportunities to jointly develop and scale circular business models,” said Elisabeth Peregi, President and CEO of Kappahl Group.
Martin Hallander, CEO of Arkivet, noted that the partnership was driven by a shared commitment to normalizing second-hand shopping. By leveraging Kappahl’s extensive Nordic retail presence, the companies aim to significantly increase the accessibility of pre-owned apparel. Since its inception in 2017, Arkivet has facilitated the circulation of over 400,000 garments annually.
